Ubicazione: Gode di una posizione invidiabile nel cuore della Valle dei Templi e dista poco piu’ di 1 chilometro dal centro della città e dalla stazione ferroviaria, quattro chilometri dalle spiagge e 400 M dal quartiere ellenistico- romano e dal museo archeologico regionale.

Itinerari: L’odierna Agrigento è erede di una città potentissima dell’antichità, la celebre Akragas che, nel V sec A.C meritò l’appellativo di “ piu' splendida città dei mortali “ (Pindaro) e della quale residuano oggi interessanti reperti e rovine archeologiche. Da non perdere assolutamente sono i templi, bellissima e massima espressione del genio artistico e architettonico dei Greci. Ma Agrigento non è soltanto Valle dei Templi famosa in tutto il mondo: la città possiede anche tesori d’arte, testimonianza medievali e barocche di grandissimo interesse. Ricca di storia, poi, la provincia comprende quarantadue comuni, aree archeologiche, antichi castelli, centri storici e prestigiosi monumenti d’ogni epoca. Numerose singolarità paesaggistiche ne fanno un territorio vario e tutto da scoprire. Una delle città più note è Sciacca, città di fondazione antichissima dotata di un invidiabile bacino idrotermale. E’ inoltre ricca di pregevoli monumenti, vanta un’ottima tradizione gastronomica e dolciaria e vi si può acquistare della bellissima ceramica. Poco oltre Sciacca si può visitare la zona archeologica di Selinunte, la più vasta del Mediterraneo, mentre prima di raggiungere la città, ci si può soffermare in un’altra zona archeologica, quella di Eraclea Minoa, interessante anche per la bellezza e la ricchezza dell’ambiente che la circonda, protetto dai vincoli di una riserva naturale. Gli amanti del mare possono recarsi alla Scala dei Turchi, una località costiera presso Realmonte, dove una parete candida, meravigliosamente modellata dal vento, cade a strapiombo in un mare turchese. Presso Aragona, a pochi chilometri da Agrigento, si possono visitare le Maccalube, uno dei rarissimi esempi di vulcanelli di fango. In quest’area, dall’aspetto quasi lunare, si verifica un fenomeno geofisico con pochissimi altri riscontri al mondo: l’emissione spontanea di gas dal suolo accompagnata da fango che dà vita ai caratteristici vulcani in miniatura. Un altro interessantissimo centro dell’ Agrigentino è Naro, pittoresca cittadina ricca di monumenti e chiese barocche, definita la “ fulgentissima “ da Federico II di Svevia. Volendo proseguire è possibile raggiungere Piazza Armerina, famosa per via della Villa Romana del Casale, doviziosamente decorata con mosaici originali del III - IV secolo d.C.

Of this once great city remain interesting archaelogical ruins and finds. A visit to the beautiful temples is an absolute must, they were the maximum expression of the Greeks ingenious artistic expression. Agrigento is not just the Valley of the Temples for which it is famous all over the world: the city also possesses Medieval and Baroque art treasures of great interest. This province which is teeped in history has 42 communes together with archaelogical zones, ancient castles, old towns and prestigious monuments covering all the ages. The numerous unique natural features makes this a varied territory worth discovering. One of the best known location is SCIACCA, a city which dates back centuries and has enviable Thermal Spas. The city is also rich in monuments and can boast over its excellent tradition for gastronomy and sweets, you can also buy beautiful pottery. Just a bit further on from Sciacca you can visit the largest archaelogical area in Europe, Selinunte, however before reaching it, stop off at another archaelogical zone called ERACLEA MINOA, it is not only of historical interest, but also a place surrounded by great natural beauty, protected as a nature reserve. Sea lovers can head for the SCALA DEI TURHI, a seaside location near REALMONTE, here a white diff face, marvellously modelled by the wind, plumets down into a torquoise sea. At ARAGONA, just a few kilometres from Agrigento you can visit the MACCALUBE, one of a rare example of mud vulcanoes. In this area with is moon like landscape, you can see a geophisical phenomenon which can be witnessed in very few other place in the world: there is a natural emission of gases from underground together with the erruption of mud, thus forming these miniature volcanoes. Another centre in the province of Agrigento is NARO, a picturesque township rich in monuments and baroque churches, defined as “ fulgentissima “, meaning refulgent, by Fredric II of Swabia. If you want to continue your trip you can drive to PIAZZA ARMERINA, renowned for its Roman Villa and Hamlet, abundantly decorated with mosaics dating back to the III-IV centuries A.C.
