Le sere d'estate il Grand Hotel diventava Istambul, Bagdad, Hollywood. Sulle terrazze, protette da cortine fittissime di piante, forse si svolgevano feste alla Ziegfeld. Si intravedevano nude schiene di donne che ci sembravano d'oro, allacciate da braccia maschili in smoking bianco, un venticello profumato ci portava a tratti musichette sincopate, languide da svenire. Erano i motivi dei film americano: Sonny Boy, I Love You, Alone, che l'inverno prima avevamo sentito al Cinema Fulgor e che poi avevamo mugolato per interi pomeriggi, con l'Anabasi di Senofonte sul tavolino e gli occhi perduti nel vuoto, la gola stretta ..."
