Trepalle fa parte del comune di Livigno dal 1790, al confine con la zona extradoganale tra la Val di Livigno (tributaria del Mar Nero) e la Valtellina (tributaria dell'Adriatico).
Il paese, zona extradoganale come tutto il comune livignasco, e piuttosto vicino al confine elvetico col canton Grigioni. Esso si trova a circa 10 km da Livigno, 21 da Valdidentro, 28 da Bormio, 50 da St.Moritz (in Svizzera) ed 81 da Sondrio.
